Traveling with your pet is easy in an RV

We all agree that there is no better way than an RV to take our pets with us. This article from our friend Boondockers Welcome shows us how taking our furry companions makes RVing a fun and an adventurous experience.

One of the biggest advantages of traveling in an RV is that you can bring your pet with you. It’s great to have a traveling companion and you know that your pet is taken care of so it helps relieve the stress of leaving them behind while you travel. It’s also easy and provides benefits to both you and your pet.

Not having to leave your pet behind when you travel means you can bring them everywhere you go. Lots of places like restaurants and stores allow dogs now, so you don’t have to worry about leaving them in the RV. But even if you do, you have all of the comforts of home with you so it’s easy for them to stay in the RV while you explore.

Taking your pet with you is not only great for you but it is great enrichment for them. They get to meet new people and explore new places which is great socialization for them. Also several campgrounds and camping services have opportunities for dogs to run and interact with other dogs. Sites like Boondockers Welcome can give you and your pet the opportunity to meet new people while traveling and many locations offer dog runs or use of their backyard. It’s a great opportunity for your dog to stretch his legs.

RVing is already an economical way to travel but bringing your pet along saves you even more money. You don’t have to worry about paying for boarding or pet-sitting. This means you have more money to spend on visiting National Parks or going to unique restaurants. And with the majority of campgrounds and services allowing pets, it’s easy to find an inexpensive campsite no matter where you want to travel.

While it takes a little extra effort, bringing your cat along is also easy when traveling in an RV. Some RVers train their cats to use a leash and will take their cat out for a walk. Can’t trust your cat on a leash? No problem, there are many ways to store a litter box in your RV. Here are just a few options:

  • Store the box in an unused cabinet or storage area, maybe in the kitchen or under the dinette. Take off the door so the cat can easily access it.
  • Place the litter box under the bed if you have under bed storage. This is a great option as you can cut a hole so the cat can access it. Even better if the storage can be accessed from the outside, then you can clean out the litter box outside and avoid the mess.
  • If you have an over cabin bed and don’t use it, you can place a litter box up there (it’s also a great place for storage in general). Be sure to select a litter box with a lid so it doesn’t spill when you are traveling.

There are many other reasons why traveling with your pet is easy but the most important is they get to be with you (and you get to be with them!). They are family after all, so why not take them on your family vacation.

Boondockers Welcome is a web platform that lets members arrange overnight stays with each other for free while traveling via RV. Hosts consist of property owners or businesses who allow RVers to Boondock on their land. It’s a great and safe way for fellow RVers or for people curious about the RV lifestyle to meet while also providing a safe place to park for one night or up to five nights.
